THE SEVEN SPIRITS OF GOD

Musick-al note # 90

The question has been asked about the meaning of the phrase ‘the seven spirits of God’ recorded in Revelation 1:4, “John, to the seven churches in the province of Asia: Grace and peace to you from him who is, and who was, and who is to come, and from the seven spirits before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth” Also Revelation 4:5, “from the throne came flashes of lightening, rumblings and peals of thunder.  Before the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God”, and Revelation 5:6 “Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing in the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. He had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth”.

The only Scriptural explanation that I have found is recorded in Isaiah 11:2-4. “The Spirit of the Lord will rest on Him – the Spirit of wisdom, and (the spirit of) understanding, the Spirit of counsel and (the spirit of) might, the Spirit of knowledge and (the spirit of) fear (reverence) of the Lord; and his delight shall be in the Lord.  He will not judge by what he sees with his eyes, or decide by what he hears with his ears; but with (the Spirit of) righteousness he will judge the needy, with justice he will give decisions for the poor of the earth”. Please note that I have entered ‘the Spirit’ within parenthesis to give clarity to the different ‘Spirits’ mentioned in Isaiah.  These ‘Spirits’ certainly are evident in the life of the Lord Jesus, and of God, our Father.

Now, please recognize that as followers of Jesus, we should strive to be like Him.  We can possess as much of these same attributes of Christ as possible. Strive for them!
