JESUS – A GLIMPSE OF HEAVEN

Musick-al note # 75

The teaching concerning heaven and hell is an inseparable part of the New Testament.  Even Old Testament writers spoke of the reality of heaven and hell and that those who are righteous will go to heaven and the unrighteous will go to hell.  What is heaven?  What is hell?

Jesus described heaven as the dwelling of God (John 14:1-3) “Let not your hearts be troubled, you believe in God, believe also in me.  In my Father’s house are many mansions, if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to myself, that where I am, there you may be also”. It is a described as a place that is free from sin (Revelation 21:27).  But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those whose names are written in the ‘Lamb’s Book of Life’.  It is a place of glory, “And he carried me away in the Spirit to a great and high mountain, and showed me the great city, the holy Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, having the glory of God.  And her light was like a most precious stone, like a jasper stone, clear as crystal.  But I saw no temple in it, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple.  And the city had no need of the sun or of the moon to shine in it, for the glory of God illuminated it, and the Lamb is its light. And the nations of those who are saved shall walk in its light, and the kings of the earth bring their glory and honor into it, its gates shall not be shut at all by day, and there shall be no night there.  And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations unto it (Revelation 21:1011; 22-26).  Heaven is real for God has revealed it to us.  It is not something that man has devised nor is it something that man can destroy.  It is as sure and as firm as God Himself.  Both God and His Son, Jesus are there for when Stephen, the first Christian Martyr was stoned. “But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God, and said, “Look! I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!”  (Acts 7:55-56),
