JESUS – THE I AM

Musick-al note # 71

The words translated ‘I am’ reveals the eternal nature of God. I am the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, he said, tell the people of Israel that ‘I AM’ has sent you to deliver you (Exodus 3:14-15).  We must also understand that He is ever-present and ‘time’ is meaningless to Him. (2 Peter 3:8). He knew the end of ‘time’ from the beginning (Isaiah 46:9-10). He is ever-living in present time – always the ‘I AM’.  Jesus said in John 14 6-11 that He and the Father were one and whoever sees Jesus also sees the Father for the Father lived in him and he lived in the Father.  Jesus made many statements to the Jews that they refused to believe and thus rejected him.  One of these is found in John 8:58 when Jesus said, “Before Abraham was, I am”. The Jews responded to this by trying to stone him because this statement declared he was a divine eternal being.

Other statements in which Jesus used the term ‘I AM’.  I am the bread of life (John 6:48). I am the light of the world (John 8:12). I am the door to salvation (John 10:9). I am the good shepherd who gave his life for his sheep (John 10:11). I am the resurrection and the life (John 11:25). I am the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). I am the true vine (John 15:1). I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end (Revelation 1:8, 11).  And I am the Christ (Mark 14:62, John 4:26).  While each of these sayings have a definite teaching of its own, when considered as an entity, they are saying that Jesus is the eternal necessity for every man and woman in the world.  We must think of him as our completeness for without him we can be nor do nothing, yet with him we can achieve the ultimate reality of life with God.  We must hear His voice and follow Him in all he asks (John 10:27-30).  Again He says, “If you love me, you will keep my commandments” (John 14:15).  Following Jesus and keeping His words will bring eternal life to every believer in Him.
