THE COMMANDS OF THE NEW TESTAMENT CHURCH
Why can’t we follow any of the commands of the Old Testament in living the Christians life? The Bible is divided into two major divisions. These are the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Old Testament deals primarily with the history of the Jewish nation and the laws that God gave to them. The New Testament deals with Jesus Christ and the laws and commandments given to His Church. Because now (in this Christian Age), God is concerned with the Church that belongs to His Son, men (even the Jews) are no longer under the laws of the Old Covenant because Jesus took the Law away as stated in Hebrews 10:9-10. “Then He said, “Behold, I have come to do your will, O God.” He takes away the first that He may establish the second. By that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all”. Paul said in Ephesians 2:13-16, “But now in Christ Jesus you who once were far off have been brought near by the blood of Christ. For He Himself is our peace, who has made both one and has broken down in His flesh the dividing wall hostility by abolishing the law of commandments expressed in ordinances, that He might create in Himself one new man in place of the two having abolished in His flesh the enmity, that is, the law of commandments contained in ordinances, so as to create in Himself one new man in place of the two, so making peace and might reconcile us both to God in one body through the cross, thereby killing the hostility”. That law with its commandments was the Old Covenant law given to the Jews which was nailed to the Cross (Colossians 2:14). The new covenant was established by Jesus so that we can be sanctified (Hebrews 10:9-10). Jesus said “I am the way, the truth and the life. No man comes to the Father but by me”. (John 14:6). All men must come to Jesus Christ for salvation from their sins. (Acts 4:12). The first Will was taken away and we are now sanctified by the New Will or New Testament when we are obedient to the words given by the Lord Jesus and His Apostles. The Hebrew writer said ‘he learned obedience through what he suffered, and being made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation to all who obey Him (Heb. 5:9). Therefore follow only the will of Christ
